Zhuji is one of the places that ancient Yue peoples in our country lived together. Legend in the history said that, Yu (name of an ancient hero who successfully controlled floods) reached the place of great Yue, he gathered all seigneurs together at Miaoshan Mountain and resided here. The nobilities had virtuousness and were rewarded for their meritorious deeds, and so he named this area as “Zhuji”, with the meaning that it is the place for all seigneurs who had reached and stayed to discuss official affairs.
In the middle of the Xia Dynasty, Emperor Shaokang granted his by-blow Wu Yu at the place of Yue and Zhuji belonged to Yue. In the Spring and Autumn Period, State Yue established the capital in succession at places such as Buzhong, Dabu and Secheng etc. within its borders. In the war between State Wu and State Yue, King of State Yue Gou Jian once made Goucheng Mountain within the borders as the place to rest and build up strength, and contrive to resume his state.
In the 25th year of King Qin Administration (BC222), Kuaiji Eparchy was established in the place of Yue and Zhuji County was established. In the Western Han Dynasty, this place belonged to Kuaiji Eparchy under the administration of Yangzhou Feudal Provincial Ministry. In the years of the state founding of Xinshi, it was renamed as Shulu and was resumed to the original name in the early Jianwu Period of the Eastern Han Dynasty. In the 2 nd year of Xingping Period in the Eastern Han Dynasty (195), it was divided into two parts and established as two counties as Feng'an and Hanning. In the Three-Kingdom Times, the State Wu changed Hanning as Wuning. It was subordinated to Kuaiji Eparchy in the Western Jin Dynasty, and subordinated to Kuaiji State in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. In the Southern Dynasties it was resumed to subordinate to Kuaiji Eparchy. In the period of Emperor Suiwen administration, it belonged to Wuzhou and in the 9 th year of this period (589), Wuning County was abolished and the original place of Zhuji was resumed to Zhuji. In the middle of Daye Period, it still belonged to Kuaiji Eparchy. In the Tang Dynasty, it belonged to Kuaiji Eparchy and Yuezhou. In the 2 nd year of Fengyi Period of Emperor Gao (677), a part of the land in Zhuji and Kuaiji was demarcated to establish Yongxing County. In the 2 nd year of Chuigong Period of Empress Wu Zetian (686), the former place of Wuning in Zhuji County was again demarcated to Dongyang County. In the 3 rd year of Guangqi Period (887), Zhuji was renamed and called as Jiyang. In the Five Dynasties, it belonged to East Prefecture of Yuezhou in State Wu. In the 3 rd year of Tianbao Period of King Wu and Yue (910), it was resumed to the name of Zhuji. In the early Song Dynasty, it belonged to the east district of Yuezhou in Zhejiang. In the first year of Shaoxing Period in the Southern Song Dynasty (1131), it belonged to Shaoxing Prefecture. In the 8th year of Qiandao Period of Emperor Xiao (1172), 10 towns in the southeast were divided and Yi'an County was established to govern today's Fengqiao. In the first year of Chunxu Period (1174), Yi'an was abolished and its land was resumed to Zhuji. In the Yuan Dynasty, places including Jiangsu and Zhejiang etc. set up Branch Secretariat for Shaoxing District. In the first year of Yuanzhen Period of Emperor Cheng (1295), it was promoted as Zhuji Canton. In the 19th year of Zhizheng Period (1359), it was renamed as Zhuquan Canton and in the 26th year of this period, the canton was demoted as a county and resumed to its former name. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, it belonged to Shaoxing Prefecture.
In the first year of the Republic of China (1912), the prefecture was abolished and was directly subordinated to Zhejiang Province. In the 3 rd year of the Republic of China, districts were established under a province, and Zhuji belonged to Kuaiji District. Districts were repealed in the 16 th year, and Zhuji was directly subordinated to Zhejiang Province. From September of the 24 th and April of the 37 th of Republic of China (1935.9 –1948.4), Zhuji |

belonged to the third administration monitoring district of Zhejiang Province, and the second administration monitoring district of Zhejiang Province from April of the 37 th to the 38 th .
On May 6 th , 1949 Zhuji got liberated and until June 22 nd , Zhuji was under the government of Xiao-Shao-Zhu-Hang Temporary Commission of Chinese Communist Party. From June 13 to November 16, it was under the administration of the tenth prefectural commission's office. After that, Zhuji was subordinated to Shaoxing Administrative Region. In January 1952, Shaoxing Administrative Region was cancelled and was directly subordinated to Zhejiang Province. In February 1953, it was put under Jinhua Administrative Region. In September 1957, it was put under Ningbo Administrative Region. In September 1964, it was resumed to Shaoxing Administrative Region. In May 1968, it was subordinated to Shaoxing District and belonged to Shaoxing City from July 1983. In September 1989, Zhuji County was cancelled and Zhuji City was established instead upon the approval of the State Council. |
