 Beauty Xishi's birthplace – Zhuji has a long history for tea production and once enjoyed great reputation. In the Tang Dynasty, it was listed as one of ancient Yuezhou tea at eastern Zhejiang production area which was one of the national eight great tea areas. In the book Yan Lu of the Southern Song Dynasty it said that Shijianling Tea was “good tea produced in the place of Yue”. In the Ming Dynasty, Dongbai Mountain Tea acted as the tribute to the imperial court, and “Four Jin of tender tea is made as the tribute each year.”(Zhuji County Record in the Longqing Period of the Ming Dynasty). In 2001 Zhuji was honored as ““Nuisance-free Tea Town of China”.
At present in the whole city there are 96,700 mu tea garden of which over 20,000 mu is clone and good breed of tea garden .There are a group of famous and excellent tea brands including Xizi Beauty Tea, Cloudy Sword Tea, Xishi Silver Tea, Bifeng Spring, Feixiang Spring and Jade Dew Tea etc., and have won prizes at the evaluation matches of famous tea in the whole country, province and city. whole city, there are 6 well-known tea markets, 28 towns and blocks that produce tea, 1,272 administrative villages that plant tea, and 179,000 farmer households that plant tea and operate tea business. In 2003 the total tea output was 5,150 ton and the output value was 224 million Yuan, and among them famous and excellent tea was 2,620 ton in the output value of 204 million Yuan. The nuisance-free tea production technology has been actively promoted, as a result, comparably better achievements have been won as for the nuisance-free tea production, and the base construction is in primary size and was approved as the national tea comprehensive utility base by Ministry of Agriculture. The ten thousand mu nuisance-free Green Sword Tea base , Zhuji City good breed of cultivation base and Baimiwan ten thousand mu excellent quality tea example garden have played their function, the professional production level has been kept improving, and tea industry has been listed as on of Zhuji City top ten agriculture supporting industries.
